What an exciting week this has been. The Some Day is Now: Woman, Art & Social Change exhibition is has arrived and we got to unpacked everything and start putting all of the art work up. It was like opening presents not knowing what cool art was about to be discovered under the packaging. This whole exhibition is from female artists advocating for social empowerment and social change. It is full of color and passion, an exhibition with strong messages, images, and concepts from over twenty artists of different ethnicities, cultures, genders, and races. There were so many pieces to be installed, paintings, sculptures, photographs, mix media pieces, and even neon light signs. The gallery is going to look amazing with the lights and the colorful pieces around, I cant wait to have the exhibition ready to go. This is a pretty big exhibition, and it requires a lot of work. For the first time since I started helping at the NBMAA I got to work with Lisa the associate curator. It is interesting to learn a different perspective for installations. Lisa has a lot of experience and has been at the museum for quite some time, so I am pretty happy to be a part of the crew working under her vision for this exhibition. This installation it’s not easy, because of the diversity of the pieces it requires a lot of work, but we have done a lot and we are getting everything done on time so having this exhibition ready for opening day will be no problem. The whole exhibition is exactly what society needs to experience, see, and learn from. The content of the pieces are powerful, portraying woman’s rights, human rights, and social justice. The artists behind the pieces are none other than Yoko Ono, Jenny Holzer, the Guerrilla Girls, among others. I will have a sneak peak of this exhibition on my next post.

With just days away from the opening of the Someday Is Now exhibition, there was still a lot to get done in the galleries. From changing the lightbulbs to the right lumens and degrees for the different art pieces, installing the screens, to adding the labels, text, and signs. Speaking of lights, since some of the pieces were photographs it was tricky to get the correct light without having the light bouncing from the piece or giving too much reflexion. Also because of the neon sighs the glass over the photographs were being reflected on them, but personally I liked that since the photos were images of NYC in black and white, so having that neon signs light reflecting on them gave a little bit of that feeling you have when being in Times Square. One of the last pieces that was installed was the Guerrilla Girls and some of the video content from other artists. This exhibition was pretty complex, not only because there was so much going on, but there were many decision to be made and approvals that we had to wait for before some of the installations. This week was definitely a busy one.
